A classic dinner recipe that is loved by all. Filled with meat, cheese, seasonings and macaroni, this recipe is sure to become as loved as Beef Stroganoff and Pot Roast.
ingredients
1 pound ground beef
2/3 cup chopped onion
Ground black pepper, to taste
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 cup dry elbow macaroni pasta
1 15-ounce can tomato sauce (or 2 8-0unce cans)
1 jar homemade canned tomatoes diced, or 1 can low-sodium diced
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella cheeseHow to make it
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and set a pot of water on to boil for the pasta. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the burger and chopped onions, then grind a bunch of black pepper over it. Cook until beef is browned and onions are translucent. In the last minute or so, add the minced garlic. Drain any grease, if needed.
When the water is boiling for the pasta, add the macaroni and cook until just before al dente, then drain and set aside. It will cook more in the oven. Meanwhile, add the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, soy sauce, sugar, and herbs to the ground beef and stir to incorporate.
Or you can be like me and forget the parsley until later. Next add the cheddar cheese (or perhaps parsley if you forgot) and mix until cheese is melted. Stir in the cooked macaroni until combined.
Pour into a 2-quart casserole dish sprayed with oil. Top with the Mozzarella cheese and bake for 30 minutes.
Let rest about 5 minutes, then serve with buttered bread, and a salad if you want.

I add some celery
I add a can of corn
My mom added corn too, but then she called it “John “. She always asked if I wanted goulash or John and made what I wanted.
Called johnny mosetti/john marzetti/john mosetti
Several spellings but variations of the same. My mom made goulash and this.
I add Green Pepper
That’s exactly what I told my friend who posted the link to this recipe on Facebook.
I add a can of kidney beans!
I do too. I leave off the cheese and cook it on top of the stove, but the kidney beans really add to it. I just wish I could find some real Hungarian paprika to put in it. It has a much spicier taste and really adds a good zing.
Amazon for the spicy paprika
I just checked on Amazon and they have Hungarian paprika. Hope that helps
You can find it at TJMAX or Ross & Tuesday morning sometimes
Amazon has the Hungarian Paprika
Spicebarn.com for any spices you can’t find
Hungarian goulash will never have macaroni in it
My mother always used egg noodles, not macaroni.
I agree Lou. Hungarian Goulash is stew meat vegetables and noodles (like stew but with noodles and spice from Hungarian paprika and maybe some red pepper flakes) That stuff is just macaroni and Hamburg or johnny marzetti

True. What some of us grew up calling goulash is not the real thing, but it’s what our mothers called it.
I agree! It’s not Hungarian Goulash, just plain 1950s feed a big family American Goulash.
Try Penzeys spices, online for your paprika.
we bought a bunch of it in Budapest on a river cruise.A whole store with different kinds.
we bought a bunch of it in Budapest on a river cruise.A whole store with different kinds.
This recipe is true Hungarian goulash. No extra additives.
check Marshalls. I don’t know where they get it but I buy good smoked Hungarian paprika there.
HUNGARIAN PAPRIKA CAN BE FOUND AT PENZIES SPICES .COM. ALL OF THEIR SPICES ARE WONDERFUL
For spice, I add some salsa with a little zip.
Maybe try penzys or Marshall creek spices?
Smoked paprika is available on Amazon
Amazon has Hungarian paprika
My Spice Sage has what your looking for. They have sweet Hungarian paprika, smoked paprika and maybe one other kind. Their spices are the bomb. Come in ziplock bags pick your size, 1oz, 2oz, or larger, etc. Now to find those nice spice jars to store them in.
I am able to find it at the supermarket now (King Sooper) owned by Kroger. Used to have to go to speciality stores for it. It comes in a red can and maybe your store can order it for you. Amazon??
IF YOU LIKE YOUR MEAL A LITTLE 🔥 LIKE ME THEN ADD JALAPEÑOS MACHO
Better yet Hatch Green Chile….
I add stewed tomatoes
Fresh tomatoes and red bell pepper make it even better.
One of my old time favorites!
I like to put it in a water balloon and whale it at people’s faces
Well you really should do that.. Then you might your nose broke by somebody.
Sad….not funny.

It is not Gulasch without paprika
I add a red pepper because I can’t eat green ones plus some celery and paprika.
this is a very frustrating recipe how big is a jar of homemade diced tomatoes, or a can of diced tomatoes they come in 10 ox,14 oz and 28 oz.
really it’s up to your own taste , if you like a lot use more , less if you don’t want a lot of tomatoes
its want of those dishes you add for your own taste ,I like green bell pepper , lots of garlic & a little hot sauce after it is done .
I Iike turtles.

I start mine with two pieces of bacon. Crumble on top at the end.
I make it no ch just as yummy
My Mom always put mushrooms in it too. So good! And lots of Parmesan cheese on top , with red crushed pepper flakes..
We used to call this mess in the frying pan.
We always called it Johnny Marzetti. Our little school served it for lunch often.
How many does this serve?
I use Rigel tomatoes
I used marinara sauce and tomato sauce in place of the diced tomatoes. Very good.
can leftover be frozen?
yes in freezer bags or air tight containers.
Add kidney beans, place in casserole dish top with mashed potatoes and cheese, Bake until cheese is melted.
We eat chips with it. On the Border or any kind of chips.
We do too! And I add cheese after cooking.
I add green peppers and mushrooms along with celery.
We add chili powder.
I add ice cream to mine
You don’t have ice cream most of the time
I add ice cream to mine
I added Zucchini to mine. It gives it more flavor.
Some of the other comments are ridiculous it is better not to say anything keep your ridiculousness to yourself. JMO
Elbo macaroni, ground beef and V8. Salt and pepper! Yummy
That’s how my mom used to make it.
With all these things that everyone adds it’s no longer Gulash
More like American Chop Suey
I am from Texas and Years back, my new neighbor from Ohio, called this stuff SLUM GULLION… said her mom called it that. Her family origin was Lithuania.
My friend from Budapest, Hungry adds veggies.
This is more on the line of American Chop Suey
wow this saintly however ,I love your enter plus nice pics might be part personss negative love being defrent mind total poeple ,
I add Italian sausage to mine
Italian sausage would be good. Thanks for the suggestion
Hamburger onion green pepper s p. Canned tomatoes, over cooked rice.
Why are you guys nitpicking so much ? If you want it to be different , add whatever you want ! For crying out loud ! Feel free to add yesterday’s leftovers if that’s you’d like ! There’s no right or wrong
I like to add weed.
Don’t waste your weed!!!
LMAO
My grandkids love this! I sub the oregano out and use 1 Tablespoon chili powder. Also, I sub the white cheese for velvetta strips placed on top 5 minutes before it comes out of the oven. Any pasta works, but Penne is my favorite for it. This is great with french bread so I put the basil and parsley with butter on the sliced french bread not in the main dish. Always a crowd pleasure!
I cook the veggies with 2 slices of cut up bacon.
I have always used elbow macaroni and used stewed tomato’s. Even though stewed tomatoes have onion in them , I like to add onion and green pepper to the hamburger while it is being fried up in the skillet. Drain it and add it to the pot .
Its Beef a Roni
This isn’t Goulash. Goulash has Kraut in it, kind of a staple for the dish named goulash, yeah? The dish is correctly named American Chop Suey.
please just get the simple things right
Edes nemes is the sweet Hungarian paprika, not very spicy at all, just flavorful. For a bigger kick, Csipos is the hotter variety!
I use bottled spaghetti sauce that already has seasoning. Then I add garlic and pepper, and red peppers.
Hungarian paprika is available at the Bulk Barn.
It just depends on where tour from and how your mom made it and called it. It seems to be a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
I use Stewed Tomatoes and then V-8 juice which has a lot of flavor!!! I like Lawry’s salt and Crazy Mixed up Salt which is low sodium !!!
My Mother called it “Moon Soup” Thanks for the recipe!
I like Turtle cracked me up!
wish sites like you would get an app that let’s readers print the recipes
We call it funeral hotdish
***Pine Cone tomatoes are the best!!!!!
I add bell peppers and Tabasco hot sauce. Dont always bake with cheese but cook it on too if the stove and sprinkle lots of Parmesan on top. Serve with Garlic bread and. Salad
My mim and grandma called it slum gunion also.
Our family called it slumgoli or slop
Goulash was something different that was made with egg noodles , beef , mushroom soup, and cream
Mom
Penzeys spices (online is available) has both sharp and sweet Hungarian papricka that is very flavorful
Leave out the sugar.
This recipe does not call for paprika!
I’m from MInnesota. Goulash was a form of Hotdish, served often. Very easy. Ground beef, onion, salt and pepper, tomoto soup, macaroni. Yup, bland. How we like it. Salt and pepper were the only spices used when I grew up. 🙂
I’m from South Dakota and that is the way my mom made it and the way it was made for school lunch in two schools I attended. Nothing added….just as you posted. We made it just in the frying pan, I suppose the schools might have baked it. One must just get used to it that way and then don’t want to fix it any other way.
My Mother used to make it then pour in an iron skillet & put cornbread on it & bake. Very good.
I add a can of mushrooms to my hamburger and onions. Instead of tomato sauce, I use cans of Campbell’s tomato soup with a tiny bit of milk. Also the only spices I use are salt, pepper, garlic and paparika.
I wanted the goulash recipe, not a cheesy baked one.
Goulash is one of those that dishes you can put anything in it you want. Like chili or soup. It’s a good .warm meal that the whole family can enjoy. My mom made it with green peppers and onions. Delicious.
I like silly posts-Keep
them coming-lady lighten up some-II is all in fun-I liked the ice cream post-silly-but cute
