INDIAN FRYBREAD

– I am Native American and I have never been so close to finding a recipe that tastes like my grandmother’s! Be careful not to knead it too much tho, because too much kneading will make it hard! We now use it when we want to taste the famous “pow-wow” burgers, we also use it as a base for “Indian tacos”, with seasoned hamburgers, and other taco toppings, and much more! Thanks to Rita, I’ve rediscovered the taste of “home”.

– I cut this recipe in half to get 6 fried breads. I added a little more salt than necessary. I sprinkled a little flour on the counter before tapping my bread balls so they wouldn’t stick. They flattened very well, I didn’t need a rolling pin. In fact, I fried them in my cast-iron pan. They were absolutely perfect. I grew up eating fried bread when I was a kid – this recipe totally set me back. The kids loved it, they used to fight over leftover fry bread. NO LEAVES. It’s pure comfort food.

– When I was a little girl, my dad and I used to eat at this restaurant that served Indian tacos. We loved them and were disappointed when the restaurant went bankrupt, but a few years ago (16 years ago), my dad called me to tell me he had heard of a taco recipe. He told me that I needed fry bread, so I didn’t know that recipe until I was skeptical. But after I made it and filled it with my favorite toppings, the memories came back. Thank you for this recipe! From me and my father!

Ingredients :

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon of baking yeast

1 teaspoon of salt

2 tablespoons of powdered milk

1 1/2 cups of hot water

1 cup shortening

Extra flour to flour your hands

Itinerary :

Put the flour in a bowl, add the yeast, salt and powdered milk.

Mix with hot water to form a dough.

Cover hands with flour.

Knead the dough by hand until it is soft but not sticky. Cover with a cloth and let rest for 15 minutes.

Shape the dough into balls about 5 cm in diameter, then flatten it by tapping and stretching.

Melt the shortening about 2 cm deep in a frying pan. When the dough is hot, put it in the pan. Fry one side until golden brown, then turn over and fry the other side.

Can be covered with honey, powdered sugar, etc. You can also make it tasty by garnishing it with cooked sausages or fried eggs…. Enjoy
